Audiences at Queen Me will feel like they’re at a party, but there is a serious undercurrent to this performance. The artists hope to launch a discussion regarding the body and the politics of display in the tourism and entertainment industry, and compel us to view these issues in the context of modern society under a global capitalist system. The guest performers, who all work professionally as entertainers, will draw from personal experience to create unique expressions through movement. In looking at the intersection of culture, tradition, gender and body symbols, the performance encourages us to ask: In an age overwhelmed by digital media, how do we maintain a sense of uniqueness as we ponder life and the meaning of existence?

A trajectory charged with detours and deviations since BRANDON (1998-1999) takes me to the newly released WONDERS WANDER (2017) for Madrid Pride 2017. BRANDON, a one year web narrative in installments,  teleports Brandon Teena, a transgender being who was raped and murdered for failed “passing”, along Nebraska’s interstate highway 80 to virtual sphere. WONDERS WANDER, a mobi-web-serial in 4 episodes, tracks trans-homo-phobic crime sites off the center of Madrid and recounts tales of empowered nouveau queer generation. In my art and film works, a fusion of genders and genres, media and medium,  compels me to appropriate sci-fi narratives, to re-imagine non-binary techno-body. FLUIDØ (2017) set in the post-AIDS future of 2060, in which mutated AIDS viruses give birth to ZERO GEN whose ejaculated white fluid is the hypernarcotic for the 21st century. In UKI (2009-), a sequel to I.K.U. (2000), the failed attempts to resurrect defunct cyborg body propagate a new breed of UKI virus, infected to mobilize viral resistance. RISE UP, NEO ULTRA PUNK. You are. They is.

This lecture is held on the occasion of Shu Lea Cheang’s film screenings in Taiwan and it would be conducted in Chinese.

Old Way, New Way and Vogue Femme。

Vogue dance, also known as “performance, is a dance form that was created by the LGBT peoples of New York in the vogue culture during the 50s.
Kirsten Astrup
HD-video

Description of the film

Faithful and Diligent (original title Troe og Agtsom) 2017
Kirsten Astrup.
HD-video
24:45 min

The video was filmed on location in a majestic building created in 1912 to serve as the head-quarters of the Danish postal service. It stands as an architectural symbol of the era’s faith in the future, communication, and modern civilisation. As a consequence of a massive economic crisis within the state-run national postal service, the building was sold to a Norwegian billionaire in 2016 and is therefore currently in the process of transforming into a luxury hotel.

Based on research into the history and architecture of the building, Troe og Agtsom comprises a series of tableaux, each associated with a musical score by the artist. In the film we are introduced to a range of queer postal workers and their managers; a lesbian couple with something of a crush on postal worker Atlanta Longlegs.

The film touches on themes such a working conditions, gentrification, privilege, gender identity, and the end of the welfare state. In terms of genre it occupies a field between cabaret, TV drama, a christmas series, and a musical requiem. The cast a.o. includes mezzo soprano Nana Bugge Rasmussen, actress Danica Curcic, and members of Vesterbro Drag Rental Service.

“Troe og agtsom" (Faitful and diligent) is the old official motto of the Danish postal service and was used since the 17th century. The film has received 3 honorary prizes.

Before the screening, Astrup and Bordorff will give a short introduction to the film and to their practices. After the film, the audience is invited to take part in a collective discussion about the film and its thematics. In the end, Astrup and Bordorff will talk about their current film project in Taiwan, A Journey to Honeymoon, and show some of the early film shootage that has already been made.

What is “daily life?” Taking eat and drink for example, every second in our lives is precious fragment. All we can see in our daily life is finished product, but it’s difficult for us to realize the process behind the production of them. These selected short videos are the part of  our “daily life.” It seems no relevant with each other. In fact, they can be small enough to penetrate into our bodies, or be as large as every object that human beings can see in the exterior of human bodies. They seem so usual but to be the most important part of human beings, and be also the invisible hands which to manipulate the daily life.

Why is Southeast Asian art so fascinating that rises rapidly in recent years? The talk invites Tang Fu Kuen, an independent dramaturge, curator and producer, and Lo Shih Tung, an artist who devotes his efforts to Southeast Asian art, to talk and share their experiences in Southeast Asia.

About Speaker

Tang Fu Kuen is an independent dramaturge, curator, and producer in the fields of contemporary performance and visual arts. Singapore-born, Bangkok-based, and recently relocated to Taipei, he has produced various projects in Asia and Europe. He was the sole curator of the Singapore pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale, presenting artist Ming Wong who received special jury mention.

If we see an art institution as an autonomous body, how does this body exercise and move around in the relation to  art ecology for its body building? How shall we evaluate the standard for coordination, balance and posture for an art center? TCAC creates a special project TCAC Nail Salon for the presentation in the 2017 Taiwan Annual, inviting art fair audience for a sensory experience to imagine the missions and works of a non-profit organization.

TCAC has proposed many ideas for how to build an art institution since the beginning, and drafted different proposals to critically shape responding positions and extended concerns. TCAC’s institutional design has been always reflecting such peculiar identity, and therefore the discursive production forms of an art center have been created according to the changing contexts–TCAC could be a multi-functional art space, a nomadic tent on the street, a paper forum, a bar, or a nail salon! Here we invite you for conversations over a manicure session, bringing a shade of TCAC colors away with you. Such color encounters are set to create a visible trace to connect audience’s bodily participation, institutional identity and the energy circulation of art ecology, producing new subjectivities in dialogues.

TCAC Salon Spice is the 2017 annual regular program at TCAC to address the relationship between body politics and contemporary society in various aspects.

Apart from the TCAC furniture components of TCAC in the Future Tense: Unit, Conjugation and Discursive Artefacts designed by Oliver Klimpel, the displays in the art fair are generously supported by many artists, including:
